The Noise in my Head (2010)
By Heidi Wolfson

The noise in my head is a delicate down
It’s feathers, it’s phosphate, it’s yellow and brown
It’s childhood turmil, it’s recess and games
It’s summertime in Baltimore and winter in Maine

The noise in my head, it don’t sound like my voice
It sounds like a chipmunk thanksgiving in Detroit
It sounds like a waterfall rushing to the ground
It sounds like four elephants tromping through town

(music break)

The noise in my head has a big old distortion pedal
It spikes and it’s fuzzy and it screams out like metal
It’s bouncy and country, it twangs when you touch it
It simpers in an ashtray and it drowns in a bucket

The noise in my head is demanding and brash
It crushes extra-strength Tylenol like yesterdays trash
It’s swampy , it’s like quicksand, it sucks everybody in
From your boots up to your eyeglasses you won’t move again

(music break)

The noise in my head, it won’t let me sleep
It stays up all night and it plots my defeat
It loses my papers and it hides my car-keys
It fights with my children and it brings me dis-ease

The noise in my head, thinks it’s funny and it’s smart
It’s bold and ironic and it pretends to be art
It’s really just a scatterplot with very little heart
I could serve it up for supper but all my guests would soon depart

(music break)

The noise in my head, it is very noisy noise
It gathers ammunition before it deploys
It starts out like static and it builds to a crescendo
It moves around like traffic and it does where it can go

The noise in my head is a persistent little bugger
It’s got fifty years of bullshit hiding underneath it’s covers
It’s fragmented and mobile and I’m forever in it’s debt
Cause it will prattle on long after I am dead
